NASTY WOMEN

NICOLE PARKER

April 6, 2018 Krysten Kauder
image_6483441.JPG

@nicolejparker, Brand Marketing at @lola

What does being a nasty woman mean to you?

To keep challenging the stereotype that previous generations of women were pressured to conform to! Every woman out there should feel empowered to be everything and anything she wants to be.

What sparked an interest / passion in femme care?

I worked on the marketing team at L’Occitane, the natural French beauty brand from the South of France, for a few years. Though I’ll admit I wasn’t a clean beauty junkie when I started, after a few years in and a few trips to the source, I grew a passion for natural products, and the craftsmanship it takes to produce them. When I heard of LOLA -- natural feminine care for women, by women --- I was immediately sold on concept of natural for yet another important body part, and even more so the opportunity to help disrupt an industry that desperately needed changing.

Who is a woman you look up to and why?

I’ve been fortunate to work for so many smart, talented women in my career so far! (Fun fact: I've never had a male boss.)

Each woman I've worked for has taught me so much and I wouldn't be where I am today without their guidance and mentoring. Right now I really look up to LOLA’s co-founders Jordana and Alex, and the whole team. It's by far one of the most inspiring, driven groups of individuals I've ever worked with -- they make me actually want to get out of bed in the morning.

What inspires you when you need motivation?

I'll admit it, I'm that person who scrolls Instagram before bed and right when I wake up. It's my fave way to get news, inspiration and motivation in minutes. But when I really need a push I call my mom. She went through a divorce from my dad when we were young and never let me or my brother feel the impact of it. She was so young herself, but always super resourceful. When I'm nervous about making something happen, I call her or channel her drive to get it done.

If you get in a funk at work, what do you do?

TRAVEL! Funks are inevitable and when I start feeling that way, I grab my husband and book a trip. We've been lucky to travel to some amazing places recently (Cape Town, New Zealand and Thailand to name a few). Experiencing a new culture and living like a local reminds me how big the world really is, and helps provide perspective. If you can't get out of town, I say book a workout. Good music and sweat never fails.

What is one of your fave lola products?

I'm really loving our ultra-thin night pads. After I suffered through the first years of my period scared to use tampons and exclusively wearing bulky pads, I swore them off for life. But LOLA's pads are so thin, and breathable, I gave it another try and now I'm hooked!

Go to beauty products?

Anastasia Brow Pencil + Glossier Boy Brow. I take my brow game seriously, but have thin, light eyebrows, so I have to fake it.

Whats the one thing that's always in your bag?

Chapstick. I hate all forms of lipstick, lipgloss, etc. I didn't even wear any at my wedding, ha!

What word or message would you get on a Ryan Porter piece?

CHILL. Because sometimes I need a friendly reminder.

Any advice you would give to young women trying to break into the workforce?

Do what you say you will and always raise your hand to help. Recognize that your job isn't about you, but working together with others towards something bigger. Being a team player will take you places.

TIFFANY GAINES

Screen Shot 2018-03-08 at 1.04.22 PM.png

@tiffany.lovability

What are your plans for International Women’s Day?

I'll be sending out Lovability Inc. condoms to women around the globe and donating to Planned Parenthood // the ACLU!

How do you incorporate women’s rights into your job? How do they influence your work?

Women's rights are at the forefront of Lovability Inc.'s mission because we donate to Planned Parenthood with every order. We believe that women deserve power over their body and future - and having the right to safe sexual wellness services is essential to that. :)

What does it mean to you to be a “Nasty Woman”?

Being a Nasty Woman means owning and expressing your power, and never apologizing for it. It means disregarding being "liked" by a majority in order to serve the greater good and advocate for those without a platform to advocate for themselves.

A woman you look up to & why?

HRC. Because she's the original Nasty Woman!

Girl crush?

My fabulous Mama!

Coffee or Tea?

Iced Matcha Green Tea with Boba, please and thank you.

Go To Beauty Products?

Sleep, coconut oil, and pastel lipstick colors.

One thing that’s always in your handbag?

Lovability Inc. condoms, Hallelubeyah, and about 8 lipsticks!

Favorite indulgence?

Popcorn for dinner.

Go to outfit?

I just got a new purple jumpsuit by NooWorks with hissing tigers all over it. I'm pretty obsessed.

Favorite brand?

Lovability Inc. and Ryan Porter obvi!

Is there a quote/motto that you try to live by? If so, what is it?

Currently, it's
"Count your orgasms, not your calories." It's one of my favorite Lovability Inc. mottos right now because so many women are hard-wired by society to prioritize discipline and restriction rather than self-acceptance and pleasure.

General advice you would give to anyone reading this?

Stop texting him if he doesn't treat you like a goddess.

ANJELIKA TEMPLE

Anjelika-Temple-Poms.jpg

@anjelikatemple

What are your plans for International Women’s Day?

We're launching a brand new piece on Brit + Co called Be the Change. It's all about inspiring women to take action, specifically focusing on four areas of social good: empowering women candidates; making change with nonprofits; getting involved in the refugee crisis; and lightening your carbon footprint.

How do you incorporate women’s rights into your job? How do they influence your work?

Empowering women through creativity is the core of our company Brit + Co's mission, so it is part of everything I do. Most recently, we created a body of work called Year in Women that celebrated all of the people and moments in 2017 that moved women forward in a rather tumultuous year. Inclusivity, social good, and female empowerment are all important parts of our company's DNA.

What does it mean to you to be a “Nasty Woman”?

To be a Nasty Woman means to be bold, to be strong, to be brave, and to be completely confident in your femininity and sense of self. To make sure everything you do helps the women, girls, and people around you, and to take action to move society forward.

Is there a quote/motto that you try to live by? If so, what is it?

"Be brave. Screw the critics. Choose courage." - Brene Brown; or "Say yes and just start. Don't wait until eventually." - Anjelika Temple ;)

Coffee or Tea?

Neither! But if I had to choose, Arnold Palmer (half ice tea half lemonade)

Go To Beauty Products?

Mascara, black eyeliner, and Chapstick.

One thing that’s always in your handbag?

Orange tic tac

Favorite indulgence?

Cheese, cheese, CHEESE. Specifically anything in the triple creme realm like St. Andre.

Girl crush?

Past: Frida Kahlo; Present: Rupi Kaur

Go to outfit?

Patterned dress + patterned jacket + footless tights + (yes this is true) TEVA

Favorite brand?

Of A Kind (run by my buds Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur)

A woman you look up to & why?

Kamala Harris. Not only is she the second African-American woman and first South Asian-American senator in history, she's a proud feminist who is determined to move this country forward for all races, genders, people of all walks of life. She's an impressive combination of intelligent and outspoken, and stands behind her beliefs.

General advice you would give to anyone reading this?

Your you-ness is powerful. Use your voice and share your point of view with the world, even if you think no one is listening. Adding your story to the collective chorus of us is how we move forward and help each other rise.

@theyariblanco

What are your plans for International Women’s Day?

I'm hosting a journal workshop at my job, The Wing —Dumbo, in collaboration with Girls Inc. Also, through my personal brand theGIRLMOB, we are dropping a compilation video from a shoot we did for International Women's Day that will tease the rest of the content we created for this month :)

How do you incorporate women’s rights into your jobs? How do they influence your work?

Well, that notion is embedded in everything that I do! As the Founder + EIC of theGIRLMOB my vision is to bridge the communication gap between Women of Color so we can better understand each other and be better allies to one another. Additionally, as a Community Manager for The Wing, my job is to make sure our members feel heard, seen and comfortable.

What does it mean to you to be a “Nasty Woman”?

I have never have actually called myself that tbh, I know the reference but not a term I've used for myself (not for any particular reason). I will say I'm a woman that will always speak up if she sees something wrong, and genuinely cares about women's rights — especially those who come from marginalized communities.

Is there a quote/motto that you try to live by? If so, what is it?

It's from Bad Boy "Cant stop, Wont stop"

Coffee or Tea?

Tea for sure

Go To Beauty Products?

Neutrogena ultra sheer facial moisturizer with SPF, Nars Orgasm liquid blush, Glossier boy brow.

One thing that’s always in your handbag?

Girl crush?

Tracee Ellis Ross and Jlo

A woman you look up to & why?

Bozoma Saint John because she's always herself & it's reaffirming to know that being you always wins in the end

Go to outfit?

Anything that's colorful and with a pair of sneakers on my feet

Favorite brand?

95% of my wardrobe is from a thrift shop... so, yo no se.

General advice you would give to anyone reading this?

If it makes you miserable, don't do it/stop doing it.

@thepouf

What message did you choose for your RP bracelet? Why?

"Be brave." It's something I have to tell myself multiple times each day and has proved to be useful, particularly recently when I was involved in a fierce battle with a cockroach alone in my apartment.

One thing most people don’t know about you?

I'm a pretty mysterious woman so there are many things. But probably that I was a pretty beastly javelin thrower in high school–they called me Xtina Warrior Princess. My jav was pink and I wore massive pearls to fool my opponents into thinking I sucked (which surprisingly I didn't). There are photos...

Current obsession?

Pink sunsets, poodles, Judge Judy's street style, and Mitt Romney's five sons.

Favorite place to unplug?

Ideally a walk through Trastevere on a fall day, but more realistically probably my couch with a glass of cold Chianti.

Current song on repeat?

"Sisters of the Moon" by Fleetwood Mac

Girl crush?

Stevie Nicks

Go to cocktail?

Tie between an Aperol Spritz and a Nolet’s and soda with precisely five limes.

What's your vice?

Espresso. It's my drug of choice and I probably drink way too much of it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What are the only beauty products you need?

Only? Oh boy. Let’s see…Clinique Clarifying Lotion, La Prairie Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal cream, Glossier Super Pure serum, Glossier Boy Brow, Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint, Sephora Cream Lip Stain, Glossier Haloscope in Quartz, and Maybelline The Falsies mascara. And pink cotton balls! I'm a beauty maximalist; I need them all!

Beauty secret?

Avoiding the sun at all costs, and CAP Beauty’s elixir.

Favorite Instagrammer?

My friend Katie of @the12ishstyle. She's killing it.

What scares you?

Sinkholes and a worldwide broccoli shortage.

Your motto?

“Not enough time for hating yourself. Too many things to make. Go.” It’s something I heard via Tavi Gevinson and I’ve found it immensely helpful. I have that written on my mirror right now.

Best advice you've ever received?

To embrace failure because it can lead to things so wonderful that you'll be glad it didn't work out as you'd hoped.

SUE WILLIAMSON

@suewilliamson

What message did you choose for your RP bracelet? Why?

OWEN! He's my dog and he's perfect. :)

One thing most people don’t know about you?

This is really bad, but I don't see very well and I always forget to wear my glasses. So if you ever see me on the street and I don't wave back, that's why...

Current obsession?

Brian De Palma movies.

Favorite place to unplug?

Rockaway Beach.

Current song on repeat?

The entire Roya album.

Your girl crush?

@kateofficial always!!!!

Go to cocktail?

This is more a favorite than a go-to, but the Alamo movie theater by my house makes a mean bourbon milkshake.

First thing you do when you get up in the morning?

Bother my dog, Owen. Then, hit snooze.

What's your vice?

Staying up way too late.

What are the only beauty products you need?

Jao Goe Oil for body, Ouai Hair Oil (these two smell particularly nice together), Milk Makeup Flex Concealer, and Eve Lom Dynaspot for zits.

Beauty secret?

My colorist, Stephanie Brown at Nunzio Saviano. She's the only person I'll let touch my hair! https://www.instagram.com/stephaniebcolor/

Favorite Instagrammer?

My roommate and good friend @lindsaywynn. She's been taking the most amazing pictures lately.

Your motto?

"Work hard, be nice."

Best advice you've ever received?

"You can always turn it around." I think about this a lot at work and with friends. Sometimes you get in a bad mood or make a mistake or have a bad day and it feels like the end of the world, but you really can always take a walk around the block, take a deep breath, and turn it around.

JENNA IGNERI

July 3, 2017 Krysten Kauder

@jennaroseigneri

What message did you choose for your RP bracelet? Why?

Resist. These are scary times, guys, and we need to stay strong, support one another and fight back.

One thing most people don’t know about you?

I'm the least coordinated/athletic person in the world but I used to figure skate as a kid (and was pretty good, too).

Current obsession?

This is more of a lifelong obsession but I love pigs and adopting a mini pig (which will be raised as my child) as soon as I move into an apartment with a backyard.
But currently Recherche Beaute's entire skin care line and going for reiki healings.

Favorite place to unplug?

My boyfriend and I love to go hiking in Beacon, NY or other towns off the Hudson. If I don't have a full day, I'll take the subway up to Inwood Hill Park to wander around and disappear for a few hours.

Current song on repeat?

These three in rotation:
Roller Skates - Nick Hakim
Romance Distraction - Froth
Melancholy Man - The Wake

Your girl crush?

Stevie Nicks. Lily Collins' eyebrows.

Go to cocktail?

Everyone calls me "grandma" for it, but gin and soda with a slice of lime is my summer (and spring and fall and winter) jam.

First thing you do when you get up in the morning?

I studied transcendental meditation, so I meditate for 20 minutes upon waking and then make a pot of tea.

What's your vice?

Stress eating anything with cheese on it, preferably something that's deep fried.

What are the only beauty products you need?

A good brow gel and Herbivore's Lapis Oil because it turns you into a gorgeous, glowing superhuman.

Beauty secret?

Take care of your skin!!! You will thank yourself later in life. My mom instilled the importance of good skin care in me in high school and I'm forever grateful. My current morning and evening beauty rituals are intense and involve a series of all-natural hydrosols, serums, and oils, but ever since I started taking skincare seriously (and switched to using only natural products) I barely ever wear concealer or foundation.

Favorite Instagrammer?

@minkasicklinger! She's not only an incredibly talented artist (and tattooed the deer skull on my forearm) but she's also literally the coolest person to ever exist.
Also @spencerpratt but only for his really enthusiastic Instagram stories involving crystals and vegan cream cheese.

What scares you?

Public speaking!!!!! If you consider me a friend please don't ever ask me to give a toast at your wedding.

Your motto?

Be you, unapologetically.

Best advice you've ever received?

My mother is extremely intuitive and taught me to always trust my gut, and doing so has helped me in so many ways.
